Das Forschungsgebiet Computational Intelligence (CI) umfasst Methoden der subsymbolischen (numerischen) Wissensverarbeitung. Dazu gehören die Fuzzy-Logik (FL), neuronale Netze (NN) und evolutionäre Algorithmen (EA), aber auch andere, weniger bekannte Methoden. Der Sonderforschungsbereich ist eine fachbereichsübergreifende Einrichtung der Universität Dortmund und wird wesentlich durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) finanziell unterstützt. Die Ziele des SFB 531 sind die Erforschung der Grundlagen, Gemeinsamkeiten und Anwendungen von CI-Methoden.
