Nach der Promotion 1981 an der Universität Hamburg über Überzeugungssysteme der Künstlichen Intelligenz arbeitete Katharina Morik in dem Projekt, das an der Universität Hamburg das Hamburger anwendungsorientierte natürlichsprachliche System HAM-ANS entwickelte. An der TU Berlin übernahm sie 1985 die interne Projektleitung für das Verbundprojekt LERNER, in dem das erste deutsche Wissenserwerbssystem, das maschinelles Lernen integriert, entwickelt wurde. Ihre Ausrichtung, ein solches System als Assistenten für den Wissensingenieur zu konzipieren (sloppy modeling), führte sie nach der Habilitation an der TU Berlin (1988) im Rahmen des ESPRIT-Projektes "Machine Learning Toolbox" bei der Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung in St. Augustin fort. 1991 nahm sie den Ruf auf die C4-Professur im Fachbereich Informatik der Universität Dortmund an.

Zusammen mit Professor Yves Kodratoff organisierte sie die erste europäische Sommerschule zu Maschinellem Lernen und gab auf der ECAI einen Kurs zu diesem Thema. Sie organisierte den elften deutschen Workshop "Künstliche Intelligenz" 1987 und den "International Workshop on Knowledge Representation and Organization in Machine Learning" im gleichen Jahr. 1989 organisierte sie die vierte "European Working Session on Learning". Auf der IJCAI-91 organisierte sie zusammen mit Francesco Bergadano und Wray Buntine den Workshop "Evaluating and Changing Representation in Machine Learning". 1988 gründete sie die Fachgruppe 1.1.3 für maschinelles Lernen in der Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V., deren Sprecherin sie bis 1993 war. Seit Bestehen des "European Network of Excellence for Machine Learning and Related Fields" und des "European Network of Excellence for Knowledge Discovery" leitet sie dessen Komitee für Ausbildung und ist auch in der europäischen Coordinated Action "Ubiquitous Computing and Knowledge Discovery" für Aus- und Weiterbildungsfragen zuständig. 1999 organisierte sie den Intensivkurs für Künstliche Intelligenz: Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining. Im Sommer 2006 und Frühjahr 2008 organisierte sie die Sommerschule "Ubiquitous Knowledge Discovery". Gemeinsam mit Xindong Wu begründete sie die IEEE International Conference on Data Mining, deren Programmkomiteevorsitzende sie 2004 war. 2008 leitete sie gemeinsam mit Bart Goethals und Walter Daelemans die international zweitbeliebteste Konferenz im Bereich Maschinelles Lernen und Data Mining, ECML/PKDD 2008.

  • Seit Januar 2011 arbeitet der SFB876 an der TU Dortmund, dessen Sprecherin sie ist. Er ist jetzt in der dritten Phase.
  • Katharina Morik leitet gemeinsam mit Stefan Wrobel eines der 4 Kompetenzzentren für maschinelles Lernen, das Kompetenzzentrum für Maschinelle Lernen Rhein-Ruhr (ML2R).
  • 2022 wurde ML2R verstetigt und so das Lamarr-Institut für Maschinelles Lernen und Künstliche Intelligenz gegründet.
  • Katharina Morik koordiniert die Zusammenarbeit der Zentren untereinander und mit den französischen KI-Zentren.
  • Katharina Morik ist im wissenschaftlichen Beirat von Rapidminer (früher Rapid-I).
  • Sie ist Mitbegründerin und im Scientific Council des European Institute for Participatory Media.
  • Sie leitete den Arbeitskreis "Technologische Wegbereiter" in der Plattform Lernende Systeme (mit Volker Markl) seit Gründung bis 2022.
  • Katharina Morik ist Mitglied der Nordrhein-Westfälischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Künste und der deutschen Akademie der Technikwissenschaften.
  • 2019 wurde sie zum Fellow der Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. ernannt.
